Save Time and Money for Manufacturing

Australian Manufacturing Industry has been facing increased competition from Asian market; especial in the wake of China dumping cheap good in contradiction to World Trade Organisation rules.

The AAP reported that the Australian Industry Group/PriceWaterhouseCooper’s Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI) fell 9.5 points in July to 43.4. The strong Australian dollar is another contributor to this factor.

Apart from trade unions and other organisation pressing for action, what a manufacturer can do is to identify various processes in a manufacturing plant and try minimizing or eliminating unproductive/inefficient processes or methodology.

A very simple example can be illustrated in the door frame manufacturing industry.

The basic process involves meeting customers/client to discuss specification after which the sections need to be designed using CAD software and then confirmed and sent to the sheet metal software for further programming and communication to the Sheet metal Machine controller.

Consider the time that is spent from obtaining the idea to obtaining the finalised product. What can be saved here?

Time and money: NCCS introduced a software tool that was developed recently for combining all these processes into one. The advantages include the time saved in between process; elimination of unwanted or inefficient processes, money spends on complicated CAD packages and staff for drafting.

Apart from that Smart Door Frame Designer enhances the frame design capability by providing in-built library for designs and addition of custom designs.

Is MetaCAM the best nesting software in the world?

MetaCAM is proving to be one of the worlds most admired and widely used CAD CAM software’s.  MetaCAM is mainly doing well in the Sheetmetal area because of its versatility, user-friendliness and cost effectiveness.

Below are some of the reasons why companies prefer MetaCAM for nesting

  1. MetaCAM’s nesting engine has a range of nesting algorithm to suit different customer needs. Algorithms are mainly for common line cutting, part in part, right angle shear and nested around clamps.
  2. This Nesting module helps simplify the work flow by directly generating nested sheets.
  3. Reduces programming time.
  4. Maximize material utilization.
  5. In an event of mechanical machine issues, easy re-nest parts for a different machine.
  6. A single nest turret can be built with Automatic turret conflict resolution feature.
  7. The common line nesting helps reduce cutting and shearing Time.

Whats New In MetaCAM V8

1. Slice the skeleton feature is now included in table sequencing. This allows the user to slice up the sheet at the beginning, end of in between the processing of the sheet. This can be a very useful feature for companies that would like to prevent possible injury by dragging the large skeleton across the table.

2. Metacam expanded its product range to support offline programming of welding robots. The first robot to be supported is the Yazkawa welding robot in Japan. The process uses the complex MetaCAM 3d simulation engine to determine the optimal path while welding parts.

3. Layout settings features have been consolidated and integrated into a single icon for easy user access. This improves the usability and allows customers to easily monitor all key settings for a nest from a single window.

4. A new and improved layout table sequencer has been added with featurs such as color coded synchronization of parts. The ability to easily group,  change corners and define the sequence of the nest.

5. A special feature has been added to improve the speed of simulation of the Bending machines in the software.

6. Edit the approach/ Escape of common line cut layouts in the layout mode.

7. Improvements and changes have been made to support common line feature in the Layout mode. This allows users to maximize the amount of sheet usage and the cutting time.

8. When you use the Dock command to place parts touching one another, it computes the beam width and uses it automatically.

9. Improved behavior of manual nesting of common line that allows users to manually merge parts and common line them based on predefined settings. This is also supported by new improved methods of sequencing for common line.

10. New chain cutting and bridge feature supported for Waterjet machines

Is the most expensive CAD software, best in the world?

In our day to day life there are a few good and and bad things we learn as we go. One of them is that “the more money we pay, better will be the quality of the product”. This statement used to make some sense some 10 years ago. Now since there is so much competition in the market this concept doesn’t hold good anymore.

This concept is not true when it comes to the software market too. The best example is Alibre Design which is arguably the most cost effective CAD CAM software in the world today. The reason for this is Alibre’s top end product is approximately AUD$2000 where as the price range of the similar softwares like Solidworks, ProE, CATIA are in the range of AUD$10,000 to AUD$15,000.

If you have the luxury of accessing  atleast 70% to 80% of the features of all the expensive packages in Alibre for just a throw away price I find no reason why shouldn’t buy Alibre design.

Things to consider before buying a Sheetmetal nesting Software

Let me start this article by defining what Nesting is all about in Sheetmetal cutting process. Nesting is a process of reducing the wastage of raw material (Metal Sheets) by mathematically optimizing the sheet cutting operation and this is done with a help of nesting software.

Here are some of the steps involved in the nesting operation

  1. A design is created by the designer using a 3d CAD software
  2. This 3D design is then imported into the nesting software which is translated into a 2D file. This conversion can be a time consuming process but with the help of a good automatic nesting software the conversion time can be reduced.
  3. The converted file is then converted into geometrically accurate part files that contain information about the true contours of a part, including material type, thickness, holes, and markings.

Before buying a good nesting software there are certain points that needs to be taken into consideration.

  1. The software should be flexible enough to suite any kind of CNC machine.
  2. Optimal cutting and coding conditions should be automatically achieved.
  3. Before the first job is processes make sure the software Streamlines Planning and provide accurate cost and time estimates.
  4. Determining the level of automation required to improve the current process. For Example: N C Computer Systems in Australia who is the supplier of Nesting Software called MetaCAM customize the software for higher levels of automation for their clients.
  5. Also considering how well the software integrates with the company’s business process. Making sure the nesting software corresponds well with the existing CAD and MRP system is very important.
