Heavy Metal & Great Mates

September 3rd, 2010

Once again we had a great turn out for the Solidfacts user group meeting on the 1st day of Spring (although it was that bloody cold outside you would have sworn it was the first day of winter!). It was good to see some new faces mixed in with the regular attendees.

First up we had Stalin from NC Computer systems give a great presentation on MetaWorks for Solidworks. MetaWorks is a highly advanced integrated sheet metal programming solution that ties the core engine of MetaCAM seamlessly into the SolidWorks design environment. Great for guys doing a lot of laser cutting or turret punching.

Manuel from Solidtec was next up to teach some of the old dogs new tricks with his advanced assembly techniques. No matter how long you’ve been using Solidworks or how well you think you know the software, it amazing how many of the little things that exist that you never knew were there. Manuels presentation was a classic example of this and it was entertaining to see the response from a lot of the on lookers as they discovered you could do things that they didn’t think was possible.

The Oakleigh club put on their usual spread of seafood and caviar and everyone caught up on the Solidworks Gossip.

The next meeting will be held in late November. We are looking for people interested in presenting so if you’re interested let us know info@solidfacts.org.au

MetaWorks to be presented at Solid Facts User group Meeting

August 24th, 2010

MetaWorks an integrated Sheetmetal solution for SolidWorks will be presented by Stalin D’Souza

(MD N C Computer Systems) at Solid Facts User group meeting in Melbourne Australia on 1st September 2010 at 6.30pm.

Click here to know the details about Solid Facts user group meeting.

About the Talk – MetaWorks is advanced integrated sheet metal software that ties the core engine of MetaCAM (CAM software) seamlessly into SolidWorks design environment. I will be focusing more on how MetaWorks process/translate SolidWorks models into sheet metal parts with the defined technology right from the SolidWorks window. I will also be touching on

•             Automatically creating programmed sheet metal parts from SolidWorks model,

•             The ease of updating model revisions and reprogram parts,

•             How MetaCAM (CAM Software) runs in single integrated UI inside SolidWorks, etc.

Alibre Australia ties up wit Simlab Soft to provide a rendering solution for Alibre Design

August 24th, 2010

Looking at the overwhelming response for Alibre in Australia N C Computer Systems who is the dealer for Alibre in Australia was eagerly looking for a rendering package that marries perfectly with Alibre Design. Simlab Composer developed by Simlab Soft  a photo rendering software which we felt would match the capabilities of Alibre Design.

Major areas Alibre was focusing while choosing a rendering package was quality at the same time cost effectiveness just like Alibre itself. Simlab Composer meets both of these requirements.

Simlab Composer 2.1

Simlab is powerful rendering software with no limit on the resolution of the images and is available for just AU$200.00 Inc. GST. These are the two most important factors that we find attractive in Simlab Composer 2.1.

Amada Machines and Software to Run Amada machines

July 29th, 2010

Amada machines are one of the commonly used Turret or Laser Machines in Australia. Apart from brand new machines, there are lot of second hand Laser and Turret Machines which are imported from overseas. For this reason we get a lot of enquiries everyday about the right software’s that help run these machines.

MetaCAM CAM software sold by N C Computer Systems  www.nccs.com.au is one of the leading CAD CAM systems when it comes to programming these machines. It supports all the new features for the Amada EM machines to the old Aries including the New Amada tooling support, Pallet changers, auto loaders conveyers etc. The Intelligence behind any Cad Cam software “post processors “are quite powerful in Metacam, and easy to customize. Also another advantage compared to the CAD CAM software that comes with new Amada machines is that Metacam can program non Amada machines that you may have , or you may buy it in the future. You are not forced to buy one brand of Machine for rest of your life because all your cam data is locked to the default software that came with the machine. In fact one of our customers recently found out when he purchased the new machine with CAD CAM system he could only program the Amada machine and his other machine (another popular Japanese Machine Muratec) could not be programmed .

One of the other main reason why lot of second hand dealers recommend N C Computer Systems and Metacam is our 30 years of experience with Amada Machines (right from the JMA days). Main reason is we deal only with cad cam software’s, unlike some software vendors who sell the tooling and second hand machines and everything under the sun. Our focus is to get the most productive software for our customers, and our knowledge  and experience on these Amada machines  , from the tiny Aries 222 to the popular Pega 357 to Vipros, Laser like LC 644, LC 667, 3015 you name the Amada machine and we can supply the customised software.

You may be thinking of purchasing a second hand machine through auction or  through  second hand machine dealer, give us a call on 1300 021 046 for an unbiased opinion  on how your newly purchased machine can run with maximum efficiency and minimum programming time.
One of the key factors in getting the most out of your old machines is to have modern software. That would use modern intelligent tools to program your machine, it can also do smart auto tooling, the optimised nesting of parts with minimum scrap or  you have products designed in 3D software’s like Solidworks (please visit www.metaworks-sw.com) Metacam can work inside these 3d packages auto tool them and nest inside Solidworks.

Also visit www.nccs.com.au to know more about some of the CAD CAM software’s we deal with.

New to the Sheet metal World? Then this Blog is for you!!!

July 16th, 2010

It’s a good idea to start with the basic definition of sheet metal. Sheet metal can be classified or can be understood as a flat metal sheet. Depending on its thickness it is either called a leaf/foil or a plate. Very thin metal sheet is called a leaf foil and metal sheets thicker than 6mm are called as plates. Sheet metal is one of the basic forms of manufacturing where the metal sheets are cut and bent into various forms depending upon various needs and uses. Normally there are two processes involved in Sheetmetal fabrication they are Deep Drawing and Flat Rolling. Now let us look at these two processes with some detail.

Deep Drawing

Deep Drawing Process

Deep drawing is a sheet metal forming process in which a sheet metal blank is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch. It is thus a shape transformation process with material retention. The process is considered “deep” drawing when the depth of the drawn part exceeds its’ diameter. This is achieved by redrawing the part trough a series of dies. The flange region (sheet metal in the die shoulder area) experiences a radial drawing stress and a tangential compressive stress due to the material retention property. These compressive stresses (hoop stresses) result in flange wrinkles (wrinkles of the first order). Wrinkles can be prevented by using a blank holder, the function of which is to facilitate controlled material flow into the die radius.

Flat Rolling

In the process of flat rolling, metal is fed through a roller, which reduces the thickness of the metal. This can be done for large pieces of sheet metal, and can produce a large variance of thicknesses relatively easily. Depending on the desired thickness of the metal, it may have to be fed through many rollers to be sufficiently flattened. In most cases, the rollers are mechanically driven. Because the pressure needed to flatten the metal is very great, the rollers must be able to exert very large forces in order to create uniform sheet metal.

Shaping in Sheet metal

Metal Spinning Diagram

The metal sheets are shaped in2 different ways they are press breaking and spinning. Press breaking is a process where the metal is bent by forcing it between the V shaped groove.  This process is very similar to the deep drawing process since it exerts pressure on the metal plates when it is stationary. This is very useful technique for bending metal in defined angles. Spinning is used for objects such as cones. It is a process in which sheet metal is spun and pressed around a mandrel to create axially symmetric pieces. The intense spinning exerts a centrifugal force on the metal, which thins it and expands its radius concurrently. The mandrel is used to maintain the shape of the piece. Its function is very similar to the function of the V-shaped groove.
